    HELP!! 325i M20b25

So I have recently blown my HG... Or so I thought.. After I did timing belt and waterpump my car was losing coolant...One day my car shits the bed and my exhaust smells weird... So I go ahead and do a HG job... Many hours later correct timing, take my head to a machine shop to get resurface/clean etc... Put my motor back together correct torque specs and everything. Finally i get to put oil and coolant in my car! WOOH! It takes a while to start and when it does it idles at 700 kinda normal except there is a huge ticking noise.. I got scared and thought my timing might be off a tooth and expected my valves to be bent but the timing is fine after several sets of revolutions of the crank and lining up the marks. What could cause this gnarly tick.. Please some insight from the gods of R3v I just wanna drive my e30 again

Could it just need a valve adjustment?
car is also unresponsive to gas, will only idle after getting it started and will die instantly if throttle is touched. Idle is low... Tick may seem quiet in video but is very loud, thanks for all your time!

That valves would need adjustment after head work. When checking timing are you rotating the engine until the mark on the crank hub lines up with the V notch in the lower timing cover and then checking the cam mark?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Get a feeler gauge. There are plenty of videos on how to do a valve adjustment on youtube (and even on M20 engines). Good luck!

yes I just got off work and was scratching my head and decided to go out and do those 2 whole revolutions and the t/d is lined up and the cam sprocket is lined up perfect.. even did it 4 times round and still good cause I was going insane about it. Would needing a valve adjustment after head work be enough to not let my car run ? It doesnt accept any throttle response and dies

Adjust your valves and you'll be fine.

If the valves are enough off, operation of the engine will be noticeably affected. But I would not be surprised if there are intake leaks also.

By chance, did you use the Bentley diagrams for your cam timing marks?

I guarantee it just needs a valve adjustment. Your machine shop likely loosened all of the eccentrics when they disassembled the head.

Today I bought a feeler gauge set for 12 bucks sick. spent an hour and a half adjusting taking my time with each one. on my 6th cyl there seems to be a loose rocker arm.. should I get a new one I have a m20b27 motor would those work? Had friend who was the one that actually did my head work come check it out he pulled the eccentric... and drops the bolt into the oil catch. I guess we're dropping the oil pan hes going to take it to work make it clean cause this is all his fault but shit happens hes helping and he didnt do it on purpose.

Of course it needs a valve adjustment, but in the Bentley, the timing marks they show are wrong...and it acts just like he is describing.

The correct timing mark on the crank is the notch in the casting, not the ones on the crank pulley, like they show.

If you used the pulley and thee marks on the belt cover to set the belt timing, its wrong. I am just asking since the "Bible" of M20s has a known issue the OP may not know about.

Lol same thing happened to me but not with the eccentric. I didn't end up dropping the oil pan though. Just let the bolt settle at the bottom.
