    Help troubleshooting an engine noise

    Car is a 1992 325i vert.
69K miles, auto, in good shape.
I've done a lot of maintenance on it since buying it a year ago.
I keep it as my US car for when I'm back in the country for work.
As soon as I started driving it I noticed there was increased noise coming from the engine compartment.
Describing it is a bit difficult.
I can best describe it as a wheezing or nasaly sound that increased as the RPMs build. At first I was thinking I might be imagining it.
But the more I drove it the more I could tell something wasn't right.
It sounds a bit like the fan is louder than it should be.
When driving on the highway the increased noise makes it sound as if it's turning more RPMs than it actually is and that it just needs to shift one more time. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Chris
