Clean and test Barometric Pressure Sensor?

I've been having a high idle and rich running issue with my BMW 325e. I was inspecting sensors on the intake/exhaust when I came across this one: http://i.imgur.com/k2yjRaE.jpg

This is screwed onto the side of the air box.
After some searching, I believe it's called a Barometric Pressure Sensor and has a model number of 0 280 101 001. It compensates for differences in atmospheric air pressure.

I can't find this thing in the Bentley service manual. Does anyone know if I can test one of these things somehow? Or where it is in the Bentley Manual? I read that it can affect your idle, and my idle is high so it could be the problem. It obviously needs a cleaning because its cap is missing. I don't want to just buy a new one because they appear to be fairly expensive and I can't afford to just throw parts at the thing.

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.
