    Super Eta swap woes - won't rev past 2k

    I have a 1988 325 with the Super Eta m20b27 engine (production date 10/1988). This weekend I did the "I" upgrade - a 173 ECU, new 3.0 bar fuel pump regulator, "I" intake manifold (new gaskets and bitch tube) and 7k tach with coding plug from a 91 325i. Also replaced fuse #11 for the fuel pump from a 7.5 amp fuse to a 30 amp fuse.

    Car idles fine, but will not rev past 2k. I tried a stomp test but got nothing. There are no check engine lights. Last month I replaced the timing belt/water plug, and at that time I installed new spark plugs, plug wires, dist. cap and rotor and crankshaft position sensor. The AFM and throttle position sensor have not been replaced.

    Any suggestions about why the car won't rev past 2k? I thought initially there was a fuel pressure problem, but I don't know. Sure would appreciate some help....

    You also need the M20B25 AFM, cam and valve springs.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      it will run w the seta AFM> mine currently is. but yeah, it SHOULD have the i afm. You did not do it at all if you didn't do the cam and valves springs also. BUT even w eta cam and vs it should rev past 2k. Whats it do at 2k? sputter? bounce like on rev limit? the idle being ok kinda rules out a vacuum leak, but not entirely.
      Now with 2.7i power!!!

        Took your advice and swapped in a known working AFM from a 1991 325i. The engine still wouldn't go past 2500 rpm. I did another stomp test and couldn't get it to work, so that had me thinking the throttle position sensor might be faulty. I pulled the throttle body and removed the TPS. It was filled with oil and sludge, so I drilled a tiny hole in the TPS just beneath the letter "S" in the "BOSCH" logo imprint. Out came a quantity of sludgy oily goo.

        Once the TPS was cleaned up and dried out I tested it with an ohmmeter and it operated within specs. Reinstalled everything and ...... the car runs fantastic! I checked RealOEM and sure enough, the AFM on the 1988 Super Eta is different than the AFM on the later "I" cars.

          ^hell yea, im glad to see some basic cleaning did the job. I love the feeling of cleaning some old parts with carb cleaner and reinstalling and noticing the difference
