    Fuel Pump death

My fuel pump is making a very faint whine (You have to really try to listen for it, but it's there). Is it on its last legs? or is this normal operation?

Car is driving fine otherwise as far as I can tell. I just don't want ti to die on me one day and leave me stranded if I can help it...

Fuel pump is pretty is to replace. If you have to try really hard to listen for it is probably fine.

Good to know. I'm not worried about how hard the job is, it's just that I'd rather not spend $200+ right now if I can help it...

You can get a cheap used one and keep it around just in case.

When my pump went out, it just died randomly. there was generally no warning. But when it does finally take a shit, lift up your rear seat (yank on it, don't be a bitch), and give the fuel pump cover a good tap or 4. If it starts up afterwards, then you have your problem. (at least that was the case for me).

I've changed fuel pumps on my E30 and E46. Both in parking lots, nonetheless. It is very easy. I had over 200K on my original fuel pump when it went out. Just keep one handy when it does go out because it eventually will.

Generally whining is because of restriction in the lines, if it's still a stock pump.

IF you're that concerned about it (I really wouldn't be. They whine a little bit) replace the fuel filter, flush the lines, and clean the tank first, and see if it wines anymore.

Mine old stock one used to whine alot after driving for 10mins. I replaced it with a new walboro 255 and filter and it was a big improvement, no more fuel cut out in long sweeping turns as well.
