    Possible AFM problem? HELP!

1986 325e starts up, rpm climbs to 2000 for about 20 seconds then starts bouncing from 1k-2k consistently. Whilst its running, I put my hand over the intake part of the AFM. This eases, almost fixes the bouncing idle while my hand is there. Does that mean my AFM bit the dust? No vac leaks, ICV appears to be fine and ICM is brand new.

That sounds most like intake leaks, a sticky ICV, a dodgy TPS or a dodgy ICM. Start with cleaning of the ICV, testing the idle switch in the TPS for correct operation/adjustment, and a smoke test of the intake.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
