large oil leak

I just got.... within the last 2 days... a large oil leak at the rear of the engine
leaking about 1/2 qt per day of daily driving but not when it sits(as far as i can tell)
I found it coming out of between the back of the engine and the bell housing
so my question is whether it is more likely to be the rear main seal or the back
of the oil pan gasket blowing out for it to be so much oil and so suddenly

Rear main seal or oil pan gasket. Once the transmission is out and the flywheel is off it should be obvious as to which it is, though it could be both. That high of a rate of loss would have me Red-X'ing the car until repairs could be done.
