Im a noob to the forum as well. however i have pulled multiple engines, and trannys, but not ours yet.
From what i know, take the tranny out with it. if you try not to, the upper bellhousing bolts are a nightmare... more so than the bitch clip on the shift linkage. replace the clutch while its out, unless your really gonna swap another motor. (go boosted m30 in my opinion:))
Take the the whole front bumper and everything else with it (radiator, fan, oil cooler, ect. )
I helped a friend do his, but i was just there for the actual removal. get a good cherry picker, and a balancer too, cause its a little tight.
Others will chime in im sure. I took out a 944 engine, and dropped it out the bottom. doubt its easier this way with the m20, but its possible.

Pulling the engine and trans as a unit is definitely easier. Usually takes me about 3 hours start to finish. You definitely want to remove the hood from the car but there's no need to remove the bumper as said above. To get the engine and trans to come out at the right angle I'd recommend removing the AC compressor and PS pump before pulling it. It will give you more clearance at the radiator support.

Agreed its quickest/easiest to do it as one unit and just disconnect the AC compressor and ps pump from the block and leave the Hoses attached and tied out of the way, drop the exhaust off as a whole leaving just manifolds on the head and everything comes out nicely once you pull the rad and fan. It's quite an easy motor to pull. just have a balancer and use like double the amount of chain for running down to the lift ear by the starter so you can get plenty of angle on it if you need.Shawn @ Bimmerbuddies
