Hey guys this is my first post here so sorry if i make any noobish mistakes. okay i just recently purchased a 1988 325e. my understanding is that its a super eta (seta). from here on out im going to be as detailed as possible to help you guys further understand my problem. so the guy i bought the car from says theres a fuel problem and the car wont start. for the price of the car (800) i wasn't too concerned about fuel problem at the time. he said he was on a trip from NC to FL and that he was about 4 hours in when the car started slightly misfiring. about 30 minutes later the misfiring had drastically increased to the point of stalling while doing around 70 mph. he said after 10 mins it started again and he drove to the nearest exit. at the beginning of the trip he put injector cleaner additive into the gas. after the incident he replaced fuel filter and fuel pump and it drove for about a week until the problem arose again. when i bought the car it didnt start in his driveway, but after I loaded the car onto the trailer i tried starting the car and it started. you could crank it over forever but it doesnt start until you stop cranking. does that make any sense? anyways, i get the car to my house and i start it up again. sometimes at the time of starting the car, it wants to automatically die at idle. sometimes it does, but it doesnt just die, it sounds like the engine slows way down then stalls. other times itll start fine and i go to drive and it will drive okay but then it'll hesitate while accelerating and sometimes it wont accelerate at all. i let the throttle off and try again to accelerate, sometimes it does the same thing and sometimes it goes back to "normal". ive tried to do research and i find problems along the lines of what is happening to me but nothing exact. everything i see says to just replace everything until problem is fixed. most of the threads i see, people replace just about everything and there problem is still there. With the information ive provided and specific details, does this sound like something anyone has personally dealt with before? of course plan b is to just start replacing things but if anyone has had this problem before and has fixed it, please feel free to take two seconds and help a fellow bimmer owner out. Input or not, i appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this thread. I just cant stomach the thought of taking it to someone when i can possibly fix it myself. thanks again

I am having a very similar problem right now. The problem presents its self more often when the engine is warm. I can get it to start easier by playing with the ignition switch moving it in and out of run and then cranking it over. Once it is running it runs okay on most occasions, other it is as you described.
I still kind of want to replace my fuel pump, it flow tests fine and sounds alright though. I am wondering if the injectors are leaking out.
If it helps you, so far I have done:
-fuel flow test
-tested water temp sender hot and cold
-replace timing belt and check timing
-tried different plug wires
-new crank and speed sensors/pulse generators
-tested throttle position switch
-new plugs
-new fuel filter
-new main relay
-new intake boot
-cleaned afm flap
-cleaned icv
-checked tank for rust (none)
-checked vacuum lines -
as of now the only thing i have done is replaced the fuel filter again and that has not changed anything. i guess my next move will be to smoke test for leaks.Comment
