1985 325e... Would you buy it? PLEASE HELP!

Hey guys, I have a chance to buy a 1985 325e with a good looking interior for a great price. Only downsides? Well, it's an e, and it's an automatic. I already have a complete manual swap worked out for $500 (please let me know if/where I can find one for cheaper), but my question comes with the motor, and I do apologize if I am beating a dead horse here but upon searching I've seen mixed opinions so I want some advice and recommendation from the experts.

I know that the e has a more restrictive head, 120hp, whereas the i has 168hp, but the e has a larger displacement at 2.7L. My EVENTUAL plans are to turbo the car, so here's my question, as I have quite a few different options:

1.) 325i head on 325e block. What else would need to be done here? I know wiring harness, intake manifold and that it is not simply drop it in and drive. How much of a pain/how expensive would this be? I see it as more diplacement = more power, but is it worth the pain and money?

2.) Screw it, turbo the 325e motor. Does this have lower or higher compression than the stock M20 325i motor? Are there any benefits to turboing the 325e motor over the 325i as it sits?

3.) Swap the motor entirely. M50, M20 325i, I can only assume that this would be the most expensive option, but may be just as much of a hassle, if not less than swapping the head itself.

My finances are a major factor here, which is why I am debating buying it at all. I want a manual transmission, I want plastic bumpers, and I want the best possible turbo platform, so am I better off waiting for a +1988 325i 5 speed to roll around, or is $1,000 for a fully functional 325e automatic worth paying all of the extra cash to get it where I want it? Sorry for the lengthy post, and thanks in advance for all the help!!

You need to make your own decision and buy the car you want. If you're dead set on a plastic bumper car you should pass.

If you just want a decent car for a good price grab the Eta and do the 5 speed swap. Add a chip and a 3.25 LSD and it will be plenty of fun and still get good mileage. Down the road when budget allows you can do the i top end conversion and boost it.

I think it mainly comes down to you, your goals, and your resources.

Are you going to be doing all the work yourself? Do you enjoy the build process? The search for the one little part you're missing? The solution to the odd problem you hadn't seen mentioned anywhere? Do you get bored one a project is complete and start looking for a new build?

Or so you want your dream e30, and see the work as a hurdle on your way to getting there? That isn't meant as an insult. I enjoy the process more than the result most of the time, but many people want the process over with so they can enjoy the fruits of their labor. Both are valid, but let who you are decide how much of a project you are willing to take on.

If you want the project, go for it. If you want the car, save up and keep searching for the car you want. Every project will take longer and cost more than you think. Every project, every time.

Thanks guys. I have a daily driver, so this will be my toy car 100% and I love the build process. The main issue here is that I have a low budget to start with so I'm not going to be able to get anything that great, and I'm just not able to find anything relatively close, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to settle on some things.

The good news is I found another one for about the same price, much better looking exterior, but a bit rougher interior, and it is a sedan, which I wanted initially. It is also a 5 speed manual, however the ad states 4th gear synchro is gone so I'll have to throw another transmission in there, but that will still save me some money over swapping from auto to manual. It is also a 1985, so has the steel bumpers, but I'm hoping I can find some plastic ones down the road and do a swap. I think I might just pull the trigger on this one.

On that same note, does anyone know of a good, affordable piston choice for a good F/I setup using the 325i head? I had already planned on upgrading the valve springs, head studs, and cam, so may as well do the pistons too.

I would considering being patient and finding the car you want. I know it's hard pressed considering those others are available, but think about how quickly you were able to find another to substitute for the first. Surely another will come around just as fast.

If you were to hold off and find a car that satisfied all of your conditions, then you will be so, so much happier in the end. The money spent on a trans swap, bumper conversion, labor, and paint alone will surely make up for the patience of finding a more acceptable vehicle.

Well, the second one I found was actually posted before the first, I just expanded my search a bit haha. I completely understand what you're saying here, but how many 1989-1991 325i 5 speeds (running and functional) do you see going for $1,000-1,500? I have yet to see one!!!

You are right though. I'm anxious to get a 325 and tear into it, so maybe I'm settling a bit more than I should. Either way, if I plan to turbo, would the 2.7 setup not be the better bet even leaving the stock pistons in to lower compression?

I love my ETA but you want a lot of things that this car just isn't, and time starts to be precious and swaps will eat at your soul and wallet. Get an '88 ETA if you can find one. Easy bumper swap, great car as a driving project. Yes the automatic is slow but as far as 1980s slushboxes go, it's not that bad. A well-tuned 4HP-22 car can be reasonably responsive and predictable. And yeah, patience is the best advice. It's easy to feel rushed when you get a taste for an E30, but wait for one, it will come along.

Thanks man. Welp, I just found out the one that I was talking about had the AC completely removed by the PO, so I guess that's a no go as well. Don't even wanna get into that. I mean come on man, you want an autox car so the first thing you remove is the entire AC system and then you sell it? Frustrating.

I will be waiting until I find one where I don't have to settle in every way possible I suppose... Thanks for the advice gents.

Oh I've looked all over man! I live in NC and I've searched from Maryland to Georgia and some of Tennessee. And I would be on my way to that vert right now with cash in hand but it's a 318!! I want an M20 2.5 but I do appreciate the effort. If you see any 325i's please let me know! Thanks again
