Engine running cold ? Odd deal.

I was on my way to work yesterday and my 86 325es was running like a beast. It had much more power then I ever felt from it and the throttle response was sweet. I pull into my parking spot at work and see steam coming from my car. Found problem and fixed it. Car back to running like it has always. It seemed like it really liked being hotter. I would LOVE to have it run with that power and smoothness all the time. I would like some input to why it ran so nice when it was running hot. I don't feel that it got to hot because I didn't have any hot rattle in the engine.

What kind of t-stat do you have? "Feeling power" does not always mean there is a real power increase. When I feel like driving fast my car always seem like it has more power (it's all in my head!).

What was the problem that caused it to run hot?

One of the little throttle body heater hoses had a split right at the clamp. I put a new hose on but I want to bypass it later.it does not get real cold here so I feel I don't need it. I wonder if my engine is staying on the cold side and running rich ? I'm going to check some things out this weekend..
