    Bad Fuel Pump?

    Hey guys/gals,

This is my first post on R3V. I recently got a 1991 325i Coupe from my dad's cousin for free. I am 16 and this is my first car. Car was running when parked. Did a quick search and couldn't find any good info. I have changed the spark plugs and now I am pretty sure that the fuel pump is dead and I want some confirmation on this before I order a new one.

I have jumped the relay and the fuel pump makes a click, but no gas comes out of the tube. (Red Arrow) Is this a bad fuel pump?

    Thanks everyone

    James

Give the fuel pump direct ground and +12 from the battery.
You should definitely hear electric pump motor running and fuel flowing around the car in the lines.

My main pump (the one on the rear wheel well) always hums a little, not just a click.

Found out my fuel pump is dead so I ordered a new one. Thanks to Turner Motorsports for the quick shipping. When I pulled the old one, I found a lot of sludge and rust in the tank. Should I replace the tank or do a through clean out?

          Replace your fuel filter, too.

^ I just did a new main pump and fuel filter tonight and it woke my car up. The filter was full of crap. I was told it had new pumps when I got it 2 months ago but I was looking at it today and noticed the main pump wasn't new so I did it and the filter. The in tank pump is new. Guess he didn't know it had 2 pumps.

Forgot to mention that I did also order a new fuel pump. So cleaning the tank isn't really necessary?

You should clean or replace the tank before you put in the new pump and change the fuel filter under the car.

Don't mean to hijack but what's the best way to clean the fuel tank? I think would also help the OP and myself.

I've never had to do it on my car, but a google search came up with lots of info on how to do it.
