Uh oh, I need help with my screw up

Last night I was finishing up an intake manifold job and accidentally switched fuel line with return line. The line burst along the line and fuel sprayed out. I replaced the line and connected the, correctly and now the car won't start. It will crank just fine and there is pressure getting to the regulator. Any idea why no start? It ran fine until the line burst when I had them connected incorrectly. It's an 87 m20.

I changed the pressure regulator and I have spark. Could I have damaged the injectors maybe or just flooded the engine?

If you busted your fuel line then I think your FPR is also shot. Check the FPR then disconnect the batteries for about 30 s to reset the DME.

I agree, if you reversed your fuel lines you in theory reversed it's operation which could be a one way street. May need to get a fuel pressure gauge in there and see what you got to the injectors.

Thanks for the replies. I did change the fpr. I am also getting pressure to the rail. I am not sure how much. I dont have a gauge here. Any idea what if any damage I could have done to the injectors to keep it from starting? It cranks with no hint of firing over.

Well if the return line was feeding the injectors, they may have got an unbridled shot of fuel. Idk the specs on the return but I don't think it would be enough to seize your injectors. Try squirting just a minimal spray of fuel into the throttle body then close it back up and see if it cranks. That would mean something isn't right on the fuel side. These other guys will chime in shortly and they know there stuff, I'm just trying to help you best from what I've learnt about these engines here. All my experience before my E came in the form of Mr. Holley or Mr. Edelbrock lol.

Ya i might try a shot of starting fluid in the throttle body in the morning and see how it reacts. I just wish i knew what happened in the rail when I had things hooked up backwards.

While you could have damaged the FPR by connecting the lines backwards, that would not have affected the fuel rail or injectors. You need to measure the rail pressure and check for injector firing with a noid light.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I can hook up a noid later today, but I'm curious why you want me to check them if you don't think I damaged them buy swapping fuel lines. Maybe coincidence but the car failed to start as soon as the fuel line burst. I replaced the fuel line and tried to start it right after that. Are you thinking a blown fuse?

You say that the engine has spark, so the next things to check are rail pressure and to make sure the injectors are firing.

I'd say your engine could be flooded. Do these have a flood mode? I know a lot of vehicles have a mode that you depress the accelerator to the floor while cranking to clear the cylinders. I wouldn't try that without finding out for sure, but most EFI vehicles have this mode.

Of course, if you spray starting fluid into the TB, you'll know for sure where your issue is coming. Then check fuel pressure. Then check injectors with a noid light. Then check other random stuff that cause a crank-no start like crank sensor, timing, etc.

Ok, sounds good. The car sat all night so hopefully if it's fkooded, the time should allow it to clear the cylinders. Thanks for the full throttle purge idea. I will look into that. I will report back with results or a coroner's report.

Problem solved Castro and Shant at Bimmerheads confirmed I had the hoses right the first timw. I was just dealing with old hoses that caused them to burst.
