temp gauge..

so i have an 86 325 with a stock 2.7, my temp gauge didnt work since i bought the car, finally i bought a new temp sender and it started working, but it only goes up 1/4 of the way to operating temp, sometimes a bit more at idle, but i start driving and it cools down, is my themostat stuck open a bit? is it because its an aftermarket sender? or someone said its because i dont have bmw specific coolant... help me out guys. thanks

change your thermostat and that should fix the problem.

sounds fine to me. my car stays at 1/4 (11oclock position) but when its at idle it'll reach half when I'm stuck in traffic. it then goes down to 1/4 when i move.
