    Engine Tune Up List ?

    Hi all,
I just picked up a 1991 325i vert w/ 100K miles. Excited to make it my own. Engine bay has some oil leaking from somewhere but otherwise runs pretty smooth. Figured I'd just use the cold winter to fix it all up and take care of the head gasket / timing belt, etc. While I'm in there I plan to do the following below. Am I missing anything you'd all do?

    Goetze Headgasket
    Headgasket Set
    Head Bolt Set
    gasket sealant
    Timing Belt
Timing Belt Tension Pulley (do I need this for a 1991?)
    Water Pump - Saleri
    Oil / Filter change
Bav Auto Tune-up Kit (distributor cap, ignition rotor, sparkplugs, air filter & fuel filter)
    Fan Clutch & Wrench
    Belts (AC, alternator, Pwr S.)

Car fax states the thermostat was replaced at 90K miles (has 100K now) but that was back in 2007. Would age or mileage cause that to go? I was hoping it was still fine.

    Thanks for your help,
    Andrew

Hoses are all in great shape, not dried out or anything, but if i run into a bad one I'd do those too.

Valve adjustment? I'm a handy guy but just to the extent I can take bolts off and on. That job sounds a little more serious. Is it really something for a DIY?

Valve adjustment really isn't bad once you get in there. As far as the thermostat I would just go ahead and replace it while you're doing the water pump. Most of the cooling system has similar life spans so it makes more sense to just do them all at once.

Replace your fuel lines. If you think valve adjustment is a bit much, I highly recommend that you think hard before tackling the timing belt job. It's too bad that I just moved out of Madison about 9 months ago; otherwise, I could give you a hand.

If the car is running pretty well, why do you want to change the head gasket? It's no exactly a tune up item, and if is not causing problems there's no need to replace it.
Like others have said, if you are not confident doing a valve adjustment and timing belt, don't try to change the head gasket as you will need to do both when you put the head back on.
If you do go ahead and replace the head gasket, have the head machined to ensure it is perfectly flat.
You also don't need to buy a wrench for the fan clutch. If you search around, you'll see how some members have made one. Remember the nut of the fan clutch is reverse threaded.

Do a compression test, if you get 140 across all the pistons save your self the trouble of that head gasket. Pull your intake manifold apart and give that a hot bath. check out your fuel injectors, and o-rings. check and clean the throttle body and ICV. Your already there, might as well. im doing im doing all this as we speak. and ive been finding things that im happy I did not over look.

Thanks for the input all, i'll try to do everything mentioned. I just got the car, so first step is diagnose where the oil is actually leaking from. If I don't need to do the headgasket then that's great. I just haven't had a chance to wipe it all clean.

Valve adjustment seems pretty straight forward, guess I would have thought it was more complicated.
