    starter problems!!

I recently bought a 1989 325i with a bad transmission. After replacing the transmission, buying lightweight flywheel Part #: 520-060-228 from Turner Motorsport, and clutch the starter will spin or occasionally catch and start . If it catches it makes a squealing sound while cranking. The plate in between the transmission and motor is present, and Ive checked and the bendix is kicking out properly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you :)

Have you checked the flywheel spacer is there and on the correct side of the flywheel. I believe that the flywheel spacer goes on the engine side of the flywheel. I am currently having the same problem on my dad's 87 325is. The starter kicks out and slowly cranks the motor with a loud squealing sound. I dont think the starter teeth are engaging and instead they are grinding the flywheel, slowly turning the engine. The starter test good outside of the car, I have swapped 3 starters, Engine turns by hand not siezed, and starter alignment plate is there. The only thing I can think of is that flywheel spacer. Where in New Mexico are you?

Thanks for the reply :) I've just found that if I shim it back with some washers it starts perfectly every time with no noise. I have the flywheel shim facing the transmission. I'm not sure if that's correct, but that's how it came off and that's how I see it in diagrams. I'm from Hobbs, NM. :D
