Girlfriend's E30 Vert Gas Tank

Hey I'm not super familiar with how the convertible's late and early model thing worked.

My gf needs a gas tank for her vert but I have no idea what tank it needs without tearing into it. (it's in storage anyways)

Is this car an early model or late?

1. Diving boards with early valance
2. Early style tail lights
3. Early style rear skirt
4. US ellipsoid headlights
5. Ownership/title says 1989
6. Late model coolant reservoir

Instead of guessing, why don't you go over to the storage area, pull out the backseat, and look at the tank.

Early lights probably means early tank.

But yes, go check, because that's an expensive thing to get wrong. Don't want your girlfriend thinking you're a dumb dumb.

In addition to peering under the back seat bottom cushion, would he be able to tell by seeing if there is an external fuel pump in front of the left rear wheel? If there is, I think that would indicate an "early" tank with the two pump setup vs. a later tank with the single in-tank pump.

All bets are off with exterior styling cues (diving boards, lights, etc.) when it comes to a 'vert since the facelift happened much later.

Yeh, the car's in storage an hour away. Had the backseat out, it's just got one cover. Would a 2 hole tank have...2 covers in the backseat?

So she chickity checked herself and got a manual 1989 325i convertible in schwartz.

For realz, one of the reasons we're dating is she's got cool interests and it down to try crazy things. She works on the car mostly, which is double impressive.

Yeh, there is a fuel filter here. So I'm safe to go with early I think.

The fuel filter will be there regardless of early or late. It's the external pump you're looking for under there.

Single access panel would mean early tank to me, but again, I'm not 100% sure.

Ok, so the VIN is WBABB1309KEC00935.

So it needs the two hole late tank? The P/N for the late is 16111180175 I think.

Had the same situation (gf's 88 vert needed a new tank). It will be a late model tank.
