so I got a 84 325e from my bro's friend and I noticed it had an i tach on there already. From what the PO said that he replaced the cluster due to the odo stopped working. After driving the car for a bit, i noticed the car would not limit my revs to 5500 and go all the way to 7? Investigated to see if it was converted to 2.7i but head casting had "2.7 eta" which led me to believe that it's stock, ecu was a 021 so it can't be chipped? although it seems stronger than my 325i or maybe it's just the torque playing tricks on me. My question is.. is this normal? what happens to supposedly stock etas that goes past 5500? does the needle stops and goes back to 0?

Stock ETA's do not rev that high.
If he kept the stock coding chip from the ETA tach it will read incorrectly, allowing the needle to make a full sweep to redline, ignoring the fact that the redline represents a different rpm. Basically, the tach may read 4k, but the needle thinks its pointing at 3k.

There is a coding plug on the tach. It's on the back for early clusters and in the front for later ones (you can Google search to find images). If it is an I tach, I think that means it must be a late tach with the front mounted coding plug. The plug tells the cluster how to react to the DME input. That is, you need the correct plug for the DME/tach combo.
If I'm thinking about it correctly, it sounds like you have an eta coding plug in there, and need the I one to match the tach so it will read the correct revs.
