    Not Starting Problem

I've been working on this 87 325is I bought a few weeks ago, not running, trying to get it running with no luck so far. The in tank fuel pump was bad so replaced that and still no start.

    - I have jumped the fuel pumps and both are now working.
    - I pulled the fuel line off the back of the regulator and put a bottle up to the regulator to catch the fuel and cranked it and fuel squirts out so I'm as sure as I can be that I'm getting fuel
    - I pulled the number 3 spark plug lead and put another spark plug in it and grounded to the valve cover and cranked and it's sparking.
    - I swapped out the main relay and fuel pump relay from a running car and no change. If one of those was bad I would assume that I would not be getting fuel and/or spark.
    - I swapped the CPS from a running car and no change.
    - I checked the voltage at the positive terminal of the coil and it shows about 11.6 or 11.7 with the key in the run position.
    - I've checked the timing belt and it's not broken.
    - Once or twice while cranking, usually the first crank after sitting for a while, it kind of does a little bit of a sputter but just briefly and doesn't return.

So, I'm not sure where to go at this point. It doesn't crank very hard, could it be a weak starter that's going bad and not turning the engine over enough to start? I have an additional ECU that I was going to swap in and try that but the numbers are different, the one in the car is 0261200153 and my spare is 0261200380.

I would invest in a good working 173 dme. Sure you have good fuel pressure? Why did you have to jump the fuel pumps. Was is it not getting power before? I had a case where the computer wasnt turning on the fuel pump.

Just to make sure they were working. One wasn't and it has been replaced and is now working. Since I'm getting fuel at the rail then the problem shouldn't be the fuel pumps. I don't have a fuel pressure tester so not sure about that.

So, the DME Motronic units can be swapped with ones that are different part numbers? I didn't know you could do that.
