So my girlfriend bought this car for her first car. It idles well and you can rev it up so long as the engine isn't under load. But when driving, it misses and sputters and at one point, when going up a hill, it stalled out completely. I think it sounds like a fuel issue? I'm not sure where to start. A friend told me it could be a broken rocker arm so i took the valve cover off and there were no obviously broken rocker arms. I haven't poked around much other than that. I did notice a strong fuel smell after driving it for 40 miles, though. temperature gauge doesn't work and I'm wondering if the temp sensors would prevent it from running well at temp under load? Any input will help. I'm stranded in my driveway here.
84 325e running pretty badly.

I would check for vacuum leaks if none, then I would clean the throttle body with throttle cleaner and the idle air control valve too and if that doesn't work then it would check for fuel pressure -
Check the pressure on the fuel, but my first guess is the vacuum leak. Unplug the hose that goes to intake from ICV while engine running and see if stalls or continue running like nothing happened. If continue running most likely you sucking air from somewhere where you should notComment
