    Aux Fan and Clutch Fan

I would like to know, before I replace my fan clutch (I am intending to), if the aux fan is supposed to switch on to help with the cooling of the car. I have tested the fan clutch with rolled up newspaper, and when the car is hot, it does take a while to stop completely.

What happens is this, while driving the temp gauge remains at exactly 12'o clock position (Dead Center). When I am coasting and using the engine as braking or slowing down, the temp gauge creeps down a few millimeters, and as soon as I start driving it creeps back up to dead center. After stopping at maybe 2 or 3 traffic lights, the temp gauge goes up about 3 millimeters away from dead center while idling and that is when the Aux fan kicks in and brings it back to the center. The gauge never goes to the 3/4 mark at all.

Is this how the aux fan supposed to function in addition to switching on with A/C, has the Aux fan been saving me or will the same thing happen after changing my fan clutch?

What do you men by "it takes a while to stop completely"? Is it chewing up the paper? Have you bled the cooling system lately?

I rolled up the newspaper, and without using to much force to stop the fan blade for fear of damaging the fan blades, it takes a while to stop. I hope I make sense. (I understand the reasoning behind using the newspaper so that you don't damage the fan blade but, I wasn't willing to chance it.)
It does definitely not chew up the newspaper.
I have not bled the cooling system, but I noticed recently my upper radiator hose leaking at the point where it clamps on to the thermo housing. I would have to top up coolant about 50ml about once a week. So I decided to change that and some others too and also the Clutch fan while I am there. Preventative Maintenance.
The Aux fan switching on as per my first post was happening before the hose started leaking.

Not sure about the newspaper test. I do know the m20 can take awhile to bleed. I leave my bleeder cracked for at least 5 minutes. My gauge hangs out about 10'o clock and I have never heard the aux fan kick in.
