I recently took off the alt belt and will be replacing it with new. Before i took it off, Ive had alot of belt squeal when the headlights are turned on or when it was cold out. I initially thought the belt needed tightening, but when i looked at the tensioner, the alternator was at its max. travel. I then took off the alt. belt, and thought maybe it was a non-oem belt, but when i looked at the numbers on the belt, it was OEM, with a length of 965mm. With a new belt with the same length, where can i expect the alternator position to be on the tensioner bracket? Im concerned that if i install a new oem belt of 965mm length, it wont allow me to adjust it for proper tension. Tired Three different belts and they all have the same issue. I did notice that the water pump pully is different on my 87 Vert (Smaller) then My 89 Ix (larger about 1"). I switched them over and Now the belt is too small. Is there something I am missing here?

I looked up a mid-'87 convertible alternator belt, and it is 9.5x965. I did also notice this note above the belt:
** V-belt revision for revised
pulley dia. from 61 mm to 66 mm
with alternator 1 284 460/461.1
Perhaps your alternator still has the smaller pulley?Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one? Info, photos, videos, and more can be found at www.michaelsvintageracing.com!
