    How to pass NJ emissions sniff test

    Hi r3v,

    I have a cracked intake boot and an exhaust that has been y piped after the stock cat into a 2.5 inch single pipe and aftermarket muffler. The car won't throw CEL's at all but I just took it through inspection and failed both the idle and rev test.

    My idle hydro carbons were around 100 over the 220 limit and the under the rev test the car barely failed reading only 18 hydrocarbons over the 220 limit.

    Past addressing the cracked intake boot what can I do to get this thing through? I'd prefer not to change the exhaust but let me know if that is necessary.

    As of now my plan of attack was:
    -New boot
    -Check all vacuum lines and replace where needed
    -Seafoam head and tank
    -run premium 93 day before and day of inspection
    -swap out better ICV?
    -Profit????

    So you took the cat off or did you do the y pipe after the stock cat?

    If you still have the stock cat - it may be failing =)

      I bought the car like this but the exhaust is stock up back to the cat then after the cat the dual pipe is welded into a single pipe then routed back to a muffler.

        I'd start with the o2 sensor. Then check the cat. And change that boot too. Also, check the ECU for an aftermarket chip, those can mess with emissions too.

          It doesn't throw a CEL tho? wouldn't the o2 sensor only be bad if the CEL is on? Good call with the chip although I'm pretty sure its stock, I'll check.

            Fix your boot, check and repair all vacuum leaks. Make sure ignition system is in good working order. Most chips won't modify idle settings so I doubt it's that. I just passed here in DE. but I had to rev it to 2500 on the high idle test before the readings started dropping.

              I had a 1992 dinan chip installed and it made my car idle like shit.
              So I was coming from there =)

              AFAIK it won't throw a CEL. You can test the o2 sensors resistance and if its in spec it should be ok.
              A failing o2 sensor can be diagnosed by worse fuel economy, car runs worse (hesitant / down on power),
              in some cases car can develop a surging idle.



              My only advice here would be: never cheap out on sensors. You'll regret it ;D
