E30 cranks, but doesn't start. Was able to push start it...

and drive an hr w/o any issues. Got it home, turned the car off, then on...and it started right up.

This morning, same issue arised. Cranked, but didn't start.

Battery is a yr old, AFM is new, ICV is new, no vac leaks/no idle issues when running

Possible crank position sensor? Try to see what I can eliminate as a possible issue, if I was able to push start & drive it an hr.

Loose connection to your fuel pump? That was my issue. It'd run fine, and stall out and die, I'd kick and scream, and it'd be a 50/50 of starting.

I think you can dismiss the CPS as a cause. If it were bad the engine would not run at all. In a like manner, if the fuel pump had a problem you would not be able to push start it.

The next time this happens, check the battery voltage. If less than 12.4v the starter load could pull the system voltage below the point that the DME will run.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

thanks for that! I can now rule those two out.

I'm gonna check the battery voltage when I get home tonight. I'm gonna pull the plugs for shits n giggles to see what they look like.

I wonder if its a bad ground? I never changed those ground wires from the engine/alt....the hood strap one is new, but I doubt that would have any effect.

Check if you have spark/fuel, if not, then cps

A bad engine to chassis ground strap could prevent the starter working. but would not otherwise affect engine operation.

I had a similar no start with my brothers 87 325es. The car would crank, but not start on its own. The car could be push started every time and ran great. Once warmed up the car would start all day using the starter. When the car cooled down for hours the same no start BS would begin. I noticed when cranking the main relay was clicking on and off like it was possessed. I had learned that the engine speed sensor controls the main relay(thanks jlevie), so I swapped out the engine speed sensor for a known working one and the problem is gone. The sensor ohm good but was still bad. I would try a new cps.
