89 325i pinging at higher rpm

Ever since I bought my car I've put Chevron 87 octane in it and just recently noticed it pings at higher rpm 3-4k. It may have been doing it all along but I don't get on the throttle much at all. I just swapped intake manifolds, put in M50 injectors, new fuel lines and fixed all the vacuum leaks and its still pinging! Things I don't think it is: fuel filter (would ping all the time), fuel pump (would ping all the time). Any other ideas of what it could be? FPR? AFM? Its possible the car has a chip already so I'll put 91 in the next tank and see what happens. The car runs and idles great otherwise!

My suspicion is that the DME doesn't have the stock chip in it and you need to run higher octane fuel.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Only reason I think it may not have a chip is I have an auto and the rev limiter is around 4900 I believe.
