help a noob out; rough idle surging problems

Finally got my hands on my first bmw and of course it's an e30.
My first rwd lsd vehicle, happily tested that out earlier today.
She drive just fine with no issues, however, when in idle it wants to die.
As soon as I get in and turn it over it starts at 900 rpms but it only takes it 3 seconds to drop to 500 and keep going south.
It will sit on top of 300 rpms until surges to 1300 or I touch the throttle which sends it to 1800 rpms in less than a split second.
I have searched many a forum for this problem and have seen the tps brought up a couple times as well as vacuum issues.
Previous owner threw a new exhaust on it however there's a cat so I don't think it would throw the o2 sensor off too much.
18 year old starting a fun project, any help pointers or even thoughts on where to post this kind of question is more than helpful.
    Thanks for lookin'!

After working through all of that you will probably have fixed the issue.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
