Hello, my first car (20 years ago) was an 84 325e 5 speed. A couple months ago I was able to acquire another E30, an 88 325i 5 speed convertible. Car wise, this is all I need :D All has been great mechanically until this last week. My first mile in the morning the car has been lurchy and kind of acting like it was in too high of a gear. After the first mile it would smooth out and be good for the day. Today on my way home, I had a problem about a quarter mile from the house. I slowed down and turned on my street and started up the gradual hill in second gear. I hit it pretty hard and about half way up it started revving on its own while I was driving and the check engine light came on. I stopped in the middle of the street and turned it off and restarted it with no change. Once home I disconnected the (intake ?) and made sure the trottle body wasn't stuck open. The engine would rev but the cables from the gas pedal were not moving it. Then I disconnected the battery and let it sit for a minute. Afterward, the revving stop but the idle was much higher than normal ( 2,000 ish). Any help, advice, direction is appreciated!

I drove the car this morning and it drove close to normal when I wasn't idling. At stop lights it was idling high but not up and down. Then I cleaned the throttle body and idle control valve. I found a crack in the rubber elbow between the two. I taped it up for now. The problem is still there. When I start it the revving up and down started immediately. Do I need a new idle control valve? What else can I try? Thanks to all.

So, I drove a quarter mile and stopped for lunch. Afterward when I started it, it revved roughly and the check engine light came on then it immediately smoothed out and has been idling around 600 with no problem. Time will tell but I think it is fixed. I am taking it by Bimmer Rescue tomorrow to have everything looked over since there is a lot that I don't know about it as the new owner.

Some of that sounds like some of my woes when I first got my convertible a few years back. My approach was to check the cruise control cables and module to make sure it wasn't misbehaving, then I started looking at the fuel delivery items. Cleaned both the Mass Air Flow unit, then the idle control valve, replaced the cracked elbow, that helped some but not completely. After I replaced the fuel filter (which according to the stamp on the filter, was manufactured in W. Germany...definitely a recently serviced item) and it smoothed out some, but then I started having power loss problems, I replaced the fuel pump and that seemed fixed most of my issues.1987 325i Convertible - Zinno, LSD, BBS, 5Spd

DullMind, thank you. Cleaning my throttle body and ICV took care of the revving problem and a new thermostat ( thanks to Bimmer Rescue ) took care of the first mile lurches. Looking forward to changing the timing belt this winter. I'm going to see how much I can learn.
