m20 makes rattling noise at 2000rpm

my car makes a really loud rattle (almost like metal grinding against metal) at 2000rpm in every gear but is louder in higher gears. In neutral there is no rattle at all. Any ideas?

Hello ( first post here ) :)

Check the exhaust gaskets, I had that happen and I thought it had to do with the transmission, but it was the exhaust gasket that was slowly dying.
