Engine stalls every time I slow down or stop

First a little backstory, I've had the car for a week and a half now and its a 89 325i. For some reason the p.o. didn't have the battery in the trunk vented so last thursday I ran a vent tube and put the battery back in, however I went full retard and hooked the negative up first and then promptly smacked the end of the ratchet on it while tightening the positive. So after that the car would had a very low idle and would just stall so I disconnected the battery and let it discharge and let the ecu reset and everything was fine. Fast forward to this morning and its have the idle/stall issue again. Every time I would slow to a stop the car would cut off if my foot wasn't on the loud pedal. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where to look? I wasn't sure it would be the typical vacuum leak or icv because its the same problem it was having when I messed up last week.

And also I'm not sure if it's related to this but the car does not start as easy as it did before last Thursday. It's not difficult to start its just not as easy.

Not sure how similar but, my brother's car is having an issue with the car sputtering, as if it was running out of fuel. Replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, head gasket, rebuilt head, adjusted valves, ICV, air filter, oil change, oil filter, fuel & air hoses and cleaned the AFM.
The car runs really well, except when trying to downshift or go into a higher gear.

This sounds like crank position sensor.

Could the sensor have gotten damaged when I made all the pretty sparks? and mine doesn't sputter the idle just drops and then it dies. It ran perfect before I messed up

Your problem is probably not related to arcing the battery. Try cleaning your Idle Control valve and check your Throttle Position sensor to see if it's functioning properly. It sounds more like vacuum to me. Check the hose coming off your valve cover to be sure it's attached. Is the little vacuum hose coming off your fuel pressure regulator in good shape? If you flex the vacuum hoses while the car is idling, does something make a difference. I've had a split starting in the intake hose that caused the same problem.
