    M20 engine removal/install help

    Just purchased a 325is and I think my first step is giving the engine some long needed TLC. The list is long already and I think I'm just going to pull it out. Is there someone on here that has a good m20 removal/install thread (I looked trust me)? Going to lean on you pros a lot. Thanks for the help.

    I don't have a full step-by-step treatise on removal, but having removed mine a couple months ago and helped a buddy do his a month before that, I do have some hints...
    1. Opinions will differ on this, but I think it's much easier to remove/replace the engine and trans as a unit. The upper bellhousing bolts are a bitch to get to in situ and it is much easier putting the trans on the engine with both out of the car.
    2. Get a good load leveler to use with a hydraulic hoist...you will need to tilt the engine/trans to a pretty severe angle to clear the radiator support at the front.
    3. Jack the rear of the car up to nearly the highest setting on your jack stands...that gives you clearance for the tailshaft of the trans.
    4. Don't forget to remove the ground strap to your oil pan...easily forgotten.
    5. I find it easier to disconnect the engine wiring harness from the ECU and pull it through the firewall, rather than disconnecting everything from the engine with it in the car.
    6. Once the engine mounts are loose and the load is taken by the hoist, remove the mount arms from each side of the engine block...that gives you more clearance to get the unit out.
    7. Unbolt the A/C compressor and the power steering pump from the engine and secure them to the body frame with baling wire...no need to disconnect any hoses.

      And if the car has a manual transmission disconnect the clutch slave cylinder line or dismount the slave cylinder. Likewise for the shifter and reverse switch.
      The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
