    Starter not engaging!!

Hey guys I'm new to the forum and I have a problem with the starter on my e30 I recently bought a new m20b27 from bav auto and I attached the flywheel I already had and put a new clutch in it and attatched the transmission but when I went to the start it the starter made a grinding noise and it won't even crank the engine over I've already tried putting in two old starters I had laying around and a new one from autozone but it still won't work (BTW) I placed the flywheel on the alignment pin and torqued it down with the proper tightening pattern

Were the 2 alignment dowels in place on the bell housing when the transmission was re-installed?

Dowels shown in attachment, a bolt goes thru each of them. They align the sheet metal shield which locates/aligns the starter.
