Oil in inlet manifold/airbox, fowled plugs, blue smoke etc.

    Hi all,

So I bought a 1990 E30 325i with some engine issues. It burns quite a lot of oil. I'm talking 75ml/10 miles.

Now, I bought it knowing it had engine issues and budgeting for a swap, but it would be nice to get the original motor going instead if it can be done at a reasonable cost. My original thoughts on the burning oil situation was valve stem seals, but then I found a load of oil in the airbox, intake boot, AFM and inlet manifold. My initial thought was ring blow-by pressurising the crank case and forcing oil into the inlet, but now I've been reading that vacuum leaks on the M20 can cause a significant amount of oil to enter the inlet tract.

Can anybody shed some light on whether this is a viable problem, and if so, how I should go about resolving it? I've heard about a smoke test to find vacuum leaks, how should I conduct this? Any common problems? If it is the rings them I'll pull the head check the bore tolerances, if they're in tolerance then I'll just do the rings but if they're not I'll probably scrap the motor and do a swap.

    Any advice is appreciated!

    Thanks :)

Morty: Well Summer maybe people that create things aren’t concerned with your delicate sensibilities you know? Maybe the species that communicate with each other through a filter of your comfort are less evolved that the ones that just communicate? Maybe your problems are your own to deal with and maybe the public giving a shit about your feelings is a one way ticket to extinction.
