What are these items on the m20 engine

My connector to the oil sensor disintegrated and while I was accessing the wire I unbolted what looks like an old school distributor retainer ring .
Upon looking at real oem I see its some bearing assembly that goes into the driver side of engine block .What is it for?
I put the retainer back on and bolted it back in but never saw it before and was curious

that's where the distributor goes on L-Jetronic M20s. if you don't have one (like most people with M20s) there is a gear in there that runs the oil pump off the intermediate shaft.
