    Syncro Mesh

    I have been noticing lately that I can hear my gears shift when the car is off. I know that sounds weird but if I put the clutch in with the engine off, I can distinctly hear the gears engaging. Is this a normal noise that has always been there that I just started noticing?


    Also, its only in second gear, but when I put my car in second and kind of pull the selector toward me I can feel a vibration through the selector. After it happened, I turned my music down to listen to it and it was a very distinct metal to metal vibration. I have a feeling its maybe the selector rod rubbing on the drive shaft. Could this be the culprit?

    The noise from the transmission with the engine off isn't unusal. The vibration in the lever when driving could well be worn bushings in the linkage.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      so that sound of the gears is basically A O.K.?

      and I figured that the bushings may be going out in the linkage I just thought it might be something else.

      Any idea how much the bushings cost or maybe just the whole new linkage?

      And difficulty?

        The bushings aren't expensive. Other than getting the forward clip (aka bitch clip) pff it isn't a difficult job.

            This just seemed to me like the sound of the gears shifting was louder.



            Where are the bushings located and where can I pick some up?

              You shouldn't really be pulling on the shifter while the car is running in gear, the transmission gears are set to very tight tolerances. So much so that an overly weighted shift knob is enough to cause excessive wear, as can resting your hand on the knob. This applies to all cars, some find it debatable so take it with a grain of salt. If you installed a SSK, then vibration damper rubbing is possible too, easy enough to look and see if that's the case.

              The bushings are cheap, under $10 for all of them. An alternative is to replace them with bronze bushings from your local hardware store, 1/2"x3/8" slightly reamed fits nicely. Pack extra clips.
