approx price for some head work?

what is a ball-park estimate for having new valve guides put in the head, back-cut valves, and a 3 angle valve job?

    thanks!

Depends on who does it... what condition the head is in, will you be bringing the head into the shop attached to the motor or free standing? Dissasembled or assembled? Do you purchase the guides or do they? Do you want top notch work or any old shop to do the work....

~$500 for them to clean & pressure test a head, replace guides and do an easy three angle valve job on a 6-cyl motor.... approx....

I took the head in completely assembled. It came back that way but with valves done, seats done, new guides and seals.

Cost was $800.00 for the headwork. I then had the valve cover and intake plenum powder coated black and stock exhaust manifolds Jet-Hot coated.

Sadly for me, I lost interest by the time it came back and I installed an s50 instead.

Now I have a beautiful clean head sitting on my bench taking up space.

it will be going in a car i like to think of as my "race trainer" its a salvage title so if anything happens I won't have racked up a beautiful E30.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead...but I'm currently porting the M50 head a bit and I want to bring into the machine shop to get a 3 angle valve job.

The guy quoted me $500 to do the work.

The head will come completely disassembled except for valve springs (which includes retainers, and valves themselves).

Now the price includes re-assembly and a wash...

A friend of mine is telling me that he is charging way too much.

          What do you guys think?

I think $500 is a bit much. About 3 years ago I got an M20 head pressure tested, blasted, decked, and valves cut for around $300. I gave the machinist the head assembled and I got it back assembled. Then again, there's 12 less valves on an M20 head. This was at some hole in the wall place called Andreas Machine on the East side of Allentown, PA. The guy's name is Jim and he runs a one man show in a residential garage. I could probably find his # if you want. Good luck.
