how should it sound?

Hi.. new to BMW and E30's.. when i got the car the valves to me sound really tight.. ( high pitch ticking) when i adjusted them, the car sound much smoother but now sounds more like an f250.. is that proper? car runs great. just making sure.. didnt realy drive the car when i first got it.

All M20's have noisy vavles to some degree or another, it's just the way they are. It doesn't matter how perfect the valves are adjusted, it still happens :) No harm done, they just sound a bit like a sewing machine, or as you pointed out, a powerstroke diesel (mine does sometimes!).
