one of those "strange noise" threads. . .

Okay, I've got a soft but apparent tap between 2 & 3x a second (that's a round guestimate) at cold idle. It is lower in frequency (pitch) than anything I've ever heard come from the valvetrain, but not much, and not as low as descriptions of piston slap would lead me to expect. It is not apparent when the motor is at operating temperature. Motor has 158k miles on it. Has never suffered oil starvation that I'm aware of -- certainly not during the time I've owned it.

Any guesses? Serious now, or monitor and see if it gets worse? edit: forgot to mention that it's a relatively new sound. . .
