I'm going through a timing belt replacement right now and I'm finding all sorts of things that I'm going to replace...all the shaft seals, tensioner, water pump, t-stat, accessory belts. It's all buried in there, so it is so easy and accessible.

While you're at it go ahead and do the Coil as well. Though its sort of either the coil works or doesnt work and no in between, you'll notice a good enough difference with a fresh one. Do all the fluids as well. Diff and tranny. And valve cover gasket while you got the valve cover off doing the valves.

        And a chip. :)

this is sort of related. i was reading the ONE thread about motor/tranny mounts and it seems that stiff rubber tranny mounts + urethane motor mounts are the way to go (people said urethan from IE, and stiff motor mounts from bimmerworld). does that still fit the norm>?

If you take it to a shop, all they probably change is the belt. and slap everything back on and charge you 300 - 500 bucks. I just bought all the stuff, I say every part came out to be 70 bucks, thats all the seals and I replace all the bolts too, since I'm at it.

I got all of my parts from a local foreign parts place that deals with Bosch, Continental, etc, and the Stealership (dealership for those who dont know).

              Local place:
Water pump (made in Germany): $66
              Tensioner (made in Belguim): $35
Timing Belt (Made in Germany): $20
              Cam shaft seal: $8
              Bosch Copper plugs(6): $12
              Thermostat 87C: $18

              Dealer:
Crankshaft, intermediate shaft seals, gasket for seal carrier plate: $45.00
Clips for TDC sensor plastic carrier: $8
All 3 accessory belts (PS, AC, Alt): $45

I also got a rotor but dont remember how much that was...maybe $20?

Doing everything myself since it is a project for me, and I miss having a car to play with. I did spend money on some tools that I didnt have, but I dont figure that in. Tools last forever unless you trash them.

I will be doing a write up on all the work eventually.
              :)

              EDIT:
forgot to mention...I get a discount on parts at the local place from knowing the guys there...
