Knock sound after cyl head replacement

A while back, I purchased a 1990 325i that had a busted timing belt. I've now replaced the head and buttoned it all back up. When I attempted to start, there was a knocking sound from the rear of the engine. I was worried this might be a lower end issue, but after reading, this seems unlikely. The car wants to start but I am afraid to let it. Any ideas on what this noise might be and should I be worried? Thanks!

Have you double checked the cam timing?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

possibly like excessive lash clearence. Thats what mine is. Just worn valvetrain between the worn cam and rockers.

Like stated, I wold first be worried about the timing being off between the crank and the cam. Did you align the timing marks for TDC on the crank and on the cam? Did you then turn the motor over by hand to ensure the marks still lined up after a couple rotations?

If you are sure you've got timing right, then I would look to the valve train. Did you adjust the rocker arm clearances? Is this a rebuilt cylinder head, or is it a used one?

Looks like timing is the winner. Digging in tomorrow to see for sure.
          Thanks!
