    Fan Clutch issue-help

I have a 89 325i and the fan clutch is finally going bad. I was wondering if it would be worth it to just replace the clutch fan with a spal electric fan. How hard is it to wire up? I saw the cost was similar to the clutch and I thought installing the electric fan did not look too bad.

Can anyone send me or post a quick instruction on installing it? I saw the wiring kit with fuse, etc. Does it just wire over to the fuse box or can you splice it in to the front fan?

    thanks,

The front auxillary fan is used in conjunction with the A/C and the various temp. sensors located on your radiator. You would be better off running new wires, but on second thought you could possibly wire it into one of the temp. sensors. So that way you won't forget to turn it on/off. I'm not sure how to do that but I'm sure with these ideas someone might.

      - meny time on other cars... where the fan clutch was not avalible at that moment you can hard fix the clutch so she run's full all the time....

or if you have some time you can take it part replace the oil inside with some heavy weight... that will fix it for a little... but its best to replace with OEM.

The cost to replace the engine driven fan with an electric fan will be higher than the cost of the fan clutch if the job is done correctly. You'd need a +2000cfm fan, relay kit, and low temp (80-82C) thermoswitch. Figure on nearly $200 for the parts.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Where to get these fans. Does anybody know where to get a good low profile +2000cfm 16" fan?

Eeeh, I tried to fit a fan clutch in my M30E30. Very, VERY tight fit. So i'll have to go E-fan.

Didn't you say, Matt, that you had good experience with a SPAL fan? What model did you end up going with?

SPAL makes some nice lower profile hi flow fans.

Yes, on my S50 car I have a nice Spal, totally worth the money.

                  I'm 99% sure it's this one...

If you put the fan on the engine side make sure you get a pull fan... The one in the link is for infront of the radiator since it is a push fan.

                        Yes, I understand the difference.

I will probably be going with something similar to Matt's setup. A push fan installed where the condenser used to be. I think that 2000CFM's will do the trick

I think the part number for SPAL is 2048. I'm going with a curved fan to save a tiny bit on the amperage and to have a quieter setup.

Matt, did you run extra wiring to relays for the low and high settings? or go with the completely stock setup?

It's just wired in to the stock aux fan wires with a lower temp rad switch.
