I just picked up a clean '89 325i today! Everything was great until I tried to accelerate full throttle in fifth gear going about 80, all of the sudden the car cut out and lost power, the car surged and the tacho went nuts for a second. I immediatly let off the pedal and it recovered and kept going. I noticed that it will only do this if I give it a lot of gas and the tach is around 4k, otherwise it's very smooth.. Any ideas? The idle seems to be a little jumpy as well...

This morning it took me 5 mins to get the car started, I had to rev it to 2k rpm for about 1 minute before it would idle on its own. Acted like it was flooded, would crank start and then die immediatly...Once the car is warmed up it will start just fine. Any ideas??Last edited by dec1184; 03-16-2008, 02:56 PM.

Typically these problems are ignition related. It sounds like it from your description. I would check the plugs to make sure they arent m20 hating platinums and be very suspect of the ignition coil.
however, do check your basics which are vacuum lines and hoses, fuel pressure, plug connections and such.Old and improved:

threw code 1222 today, goes off when I accelerate, comes back on about 10 secs later. Found some cracks in my intake boot, replaced it and cleaned the icv, didn't help much. It's only cutting out when I floor it above 30mph, then the cke light comes on, and as soon as I let off the accelerator or accelerate normally it's fine. I'm getting irritated with this.Last edited by dec1184; 03-16-2008, 07:03 PM.
