Battery was dead on of my cars. No problem, charged it up. Connected the battery and saw some smoke coming from the alternator? Smoking stopped, so I tried to start the car and it won't turn over? What did I do wrong? Before this I parked the car about 3 weeks ago and everything was normal...

replaced the alternator and the battery and the car starts up fine...everything seems normal except the idle isn't too steady...moves from about 6-800rpms are idle...also the throttle doesn't seem as responsive as it was...what else should i check? took out the ECU and nothing looks fried, should I replace it anyway?1993 325ic Schwarz/Natur
