    fried alternator?

Battery was dead on of my cars. No problem, charged it up. Connected the battery and saw some smoke coming from the alternator? Smoking stopped, so I tried to start the car and it won't turn over? What did I do wrong? Before this I parked the car about 3 weeks ago and everything was normal...

Don’t want to insult you, but, is there any chance you may have hooked up the battery in reverse polarity?

don't think so...on the cabs the battery cables won't reach the other way

Could you have put the battery in backwards? They would reach opposite poles then.

If the battery was in backwards, the cables wouldn't reach the poles on the battery...

figured out what i did...when i charged the battery i must have hooked up the charger backwards...i got a new battery and now the battery light on the instrument panel is lit up...the engine won't crank...all i hear is the clicking of the starter...replace the alternator and i should be fine right?

                My guess is no.

(not trying to be sarcastic, that really blows, but I think you stand a good chance of breaking more than the rectifier bridge in the alt.)

Replaced the alternator...still the same except the battery light on the instrument cluster isn't lit anymore...what else should I check for?

there a few fuses blown in the fuse box...i'll replace them tomorrow, but none of them have to do with starting the motor...

replaced the alternator and the battery and the car starts up fine...everything seems normal except the idle isn't too steady...moves from about 6-800rpms are idle...also the throttle doesn't seem as responsive as it was...what else should i check? took out the ECU and nothing looks fried, should I replace it anyway?
