    Is there an easy way to replace a starter on an 86 325e?

    yep, unbolt it.

    invest in a set of metric gear wrenches.

      He's pretty much right on.

      Best bet is to remove the airbox and whatnot, maybe remove the fuel canister, so you can see the starter from above. Then get to it underneath with some long extensions. While you do that, have someone hold the nuts in place with a wrench. Might work well - but not sure! :)
