    help!!!

allright since i got into an accident last winter i fixed my car and its back on the road now, i have replaced the radiator and fan clutch +fan blades from 84 318i and its working good, my raddi support was bent and its all back to gether right now!!! my question is why my car is making such a noisy noisy sound that is coming up from the front i think its from the fan or the fan clutch since its a 318 fan clutch , baisically the sound doesnt come up untill the car heats up, and the car sometime heats up if iam sitting in the traffic not moving, so would that be a bad water pump ??? i never heared this sound before the accident .

    thanks R3V.

here is a video so u can hear it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZc-NkW03cQ

make sure the fan blades aren't making contact with anything. Check to make sure its not coming in contact with:
    - Fan shroud
    - radiator itself
    - hoses

the fan doesn't spin until it is required to (when the coolant hits a specific temperature)

so one thing for sure, your thermostat works ;)

don't worry about the thermostat. like I said, it's obvious it works fine if the fan kicks in when the car heats up.

and I know you have a mechanical fan, by your obvious description in your original post.

our clutch fans are engaged by the coolant let through by the thermostat when the coolant is at the right temperature.

              Uh, what?
That is news to me... where do you hook up the coolant lines to the fan?

I always thought that the viscous fan engaged and disengaged based on the ambient heat in the engine bay. In other words, the hotter it gets, the more engaged the clutch gets. That is how all the other BMW viscous fans worked that I have dealt with.

              To the OP,

Make sure you check your engine mounts, especially after being in a wreck. If they are cracked or broken, and the fan starts to spin fully, it could cause enough wobble to allow the fan to start hitting your coolant lines. Check those lines for damage.

The thermostat won't be making any noise one way or another.

Does your car have A/C? If it does, you need that electric fan along with the viscous fan.

Edit: I just watched the video. I don't hear anything. Is it a thumping sound or a hissing sound or what?

hey man i have AC(and yes the front AC fan is kicking at about 2-3rpm) , and the fan+fan clutch is not touching the cooling lines, hoses. etc , the lower raddi hose was touching the alternator but the problem is solved right now for the lower hose, i just went outside and turn my car on, i mean whene i first start the car for the first 2-3 minutes its fine ,but after that this sound comes on again. anyways i am just gonna buy another fan clutch +fan blades M20B27 one and try again if it still make that sound i might just change the motor mounts. P.S u can hear the sound after i made the turn facing the camera.
                  thanks.

Check out the fan if its getting hot and making the noise then when you got hit it probubly pushed the rad into the fan and crushed the fan clutch and not when it gets hot and the fan is spinning at full rpm its possible the fan is wobbling and or rubbing the shroud. Give the fan a spin by hand when cold and when hot and look at the variables.
                        Good luck
