    M20 Transmission Mount Upgrade

Most of you are ready for this and looking for the RIGHT info...
Also a must if you havent addressed stabilizing the tranny after or in preperation for a short-shift kit.

    Back-date to the e21 or e28 manual/auto transmission mounts.
These cars used only one mount, thus had to be stiffer. I would say its a hard rubber, more solid than a stock M20 tranny mount or any M-series vehicles. Not to the level of urethane race mounts - will not induce the amount of vibrations and noise as described by other forum test subjects.

-They are 1-2mm shorter than stock but being stiffer, they are probably the exact height needed. A washer can fix this if you deem necessary.
-The other thing to note, the bolts are a size larger so you will need to drill out the tranny mount and the tranny - an easy task even under the car.
Might as well purchase the nuts and washers while youre placing the order:
    03 - FLAT WASHER - 64521350824 - x2
    04 - HEX NUT - 07119915558 - x4
    09 - WAVE WASHER - 07119932112 - x2
-Note there is a long end and short - the short end is too short to be on the tranny side with a washer in place, as there should be one for proper installation. The picture depicts it installed wrong - i found out the hard way.
-There are a couple tabs on the transmission mount that will interfere slightly - address them with grinding them off the mount bracket or notching the mounts with a dremel. Again, nothing complicated here.

any reason not to just pick up some AKG ones?

or were you wanting to stay w/ rubber for a reason?

I guess the idea behind going with these is not only price, but more of being a step up from stock. AKG has a nice selection of various options which would be next step above this. But i think most people have daily drivers and want the "just right" amount of tranny stabilization that will not induce annoying levels of vibration and noise into the cabin.
A great match for these tranny mounts are poly engine mounts. But if one were still not wanting to go that extreme, i believe its the e34 motor mounts that are beefier. Another one of those one step up mods until you get into higher dollar aftermarket products.
Another upgrade which has been covered specifically in a thread around here is the guibo upgrade to the e34 M5. It has the same diameter mount pattern but is thicker so be prepared to find longer bolts for that.
