I'm a new member and getting used to e30's, so please bare with me.
Just recently purchased a 87' 325e, the car is stock except for the PO did a "hot air" intake, inwhich he just stuck on a giant cone filter directly to the MAF and also bypassed a breather hose and added a aftermarket cone breather. He also sawed off the stock muffler and welded in a glasspack.
Now with that said, I am experiencing a weird hesitation during acceleration.
The best way i can put it is a "row boat" feeling when you accelerate, and this greatly reduces the power the car has. The feeling is most pronounced at 1/2 throttle, and it feels like the car fights through it better at WOT.
The kicker is that the car has no starting issues, and has good fuel economy. It runs especially pefect, with almost zero "row boat" feeling and considerably more power in the cold mornings and cold evenings than it does during the heat of the day.
Can someone help me guide what i need to check to figure this problem out?
I don't think its the ICV valve, i cleaned that out and there was no change.
The engine temp sensor works intermittently, if at all (thinking it might be loose since it jumps especially when i hit a bump). When it does work it consistently shows a fault temperature for the motor. As in when the motor is at normal operating temperature it will show just below the first tick on the temp gauge.
I keep hoping its not a combination of problems, i did take out the headlight assembly to see if its not just the intake, and although i did think it made a minimal difference in throttle response, the row-boat feeling was never diminished significantly.
I'm at a loss!!
help!
