    e30 eta swap/replacement = not running

OOOkkkk This m20 has me stumped

So i swapped an 86 eta standard engine and harness into my 87 eta auto. I jumped the starter relay to get it to crank, works fine. At fist i had no fuel, found a bad relay, replaced it and now have fuel. Yay!

I have no spark, but i have power at the coil. I tried two sets of CPS from running engines with no luck. I replaced all the relays from a running car, again no luck. At one point i got it to start and run for about 30 seconds before it died out, I had the afm boot off so i thought that was the culprit, hooked it all back up and still no go.

Now i just remembered something about the 87 e harness being different than the others, but if that was my issue why did it run for a bit? This damn eta has me stumped

Also is the main relay supposed to click whenever the battery is connected? mine does for some reason and it doesn't seam right to me...

    Any ideas?

Check your fusible link in the trunk , its about 2ft from the battery flat and wrapped in shrink wrap.

Is it in line with the battery cable? I moved my battery up front, and i no longer have a trunk ;)

The main relay should only click on when in RUN and START.

The fusible link is inline with the battery cable, the really small cable that hooks up to the battery junction block at the front of the car and usually provides power to the ECU.

The coil is powered through C101 pin 7 in both the 86 and 87 eta. The timing control is identical. Motronic pin 1.

The main relay clicks as soon as i connect the battery, it doesn't matter if the c101 is plugged in or not... so i got something messed up there

Yeah i deleted that cable and that ecu power is hooked right up to the battery.

I'm getting 12 volts at the coil but im not sure if the ecu is getting power or signal from the CPS...

ok so swapped the 87 harness back in, it sputtered and had spark but no fuel, tinkered with the relay, no i have fuel and no spark. Is there an easy way to apply power to the ecu to test that? other than that i'm back at square one

by fuel, do you mean you see signal with a test light at the injector harness, or fuel meaning the fuel pump relay is working?

How are you tinkering with these relays?
