I guess I will just go with Hallen on this and assume it's a heat sensor, since nobody else seems to have any idea.

If nobody told me differently I was planning on installing that sleeve anyway. I was just secretly hoping that a few people would pop up saying "I've been running without it for 300,000 miles. Furthermore, I shaved a full second off of my 1/4 mile upon it's removal and I now get 37mpg in the city."

Alas, I was disappointed. Luckily I have another gasket sitting around for just such an occasion.

Jordan where are you in Austin? Mabey you need some supervision before attempting these motor rebuilds.

Sorry, I was making a guess. It isn't a heat sensor. It is a relief valve according to the parts manual. I have no idea what it does.

Oh damnit. I swore I looked at that diagram 3 times trying to figure out what it was and I never saw it. Relief valve.

If thats actually the relief valve, then yes, its very important. Otherwise, you'll have zero oil pressure.

As in, all the time? That would be a check valve, no?

I thought it was there incase something caused the oil pressure to go dangerously high...this valve would release the pressure to avoid damage to the system.

If that is the case, then it's a only a safety item, not a necessity.

It's not a relief valve. It's a sleeve that goes over part of the relief valve. The relief valve was always installed.

My current M20b20 does't have that part.

My relief valve came from e21 engine and didn't have the sleeve.

I have no idea what it does.
