Sputter at idle - almost misfire, flat acceleration?

89 325iX - starting and idling, sputtering through exhaust - if you stand at the back of the car, the two exhaust tips almost alternate, pulsating. Low end acceleration is flat, bogged down. Get it up over 4k - not bad at all, revs smooth, pulls stronger. Let it get below 4, between 2-3, acts like a clogged cat, very restricted. (I cut the cat out, still doing it.)

    Parts replaced:
fuel pump, filter, fuel pressure regulator
    spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor
coolant temp sensor, engine temp sensor
    afm, ecu
    tps
    oxygen sensor
    removed catalytic converter
    thermostat

Maybe clogged injectors? Ignition coil? CPS? Ideas? Ways to test?

With what you've done, I'd suspect an intake leak. Clogged injectors, the coil, or CPS will typically cause a worse problem at higher engine speed, which doesn't seem to be the case here. But an intake leak has a proportionally greater affect a lower engine speed.

Have you adjusted the valves recently? Have you had a compression and leakdown test done?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

You were right - sprayed the intake manifolds down at the gaskets and she chugged hard, so there's a pretty good leak there. I'll pop the manifold off and replace the gaskets - the PO did that too, must have done a great job :hitler:

hey ethirdy, I'm posting on my buddies account, since mine doesn't seem to work. Anyways, I drive an '87 325i, and it sounds like my problem is very similar to what was happening with your car.
I have sprayed the intake manifold gaskets, but it didn't seem to affect anything. I wasn't able to get them as well as I had hoped though, and was kind of curious how much fluid you had to use before you noticed a difference?
Any other information you may have would be really helpful as well. I've changed the fuel filter, and swapped my afm, as well as my ICV with my buddies(which are good, since they work in his car) and it did not change anything. Thanks for your help

Very little spray - stand on the passenger side of the car, and spray at the far side of the valve cover. It should change fairly soon if that's your issue.

Check the fuel pressure regulator, check the air intake boot, all the vacuum lines, especially the one that goes under the manifold into the valve cover, swap the ecu with a known good one.

How about the fuel pump? Check pressure/power/etc? Main/fuel relays? Tap on them with a screwdriver with the car running, if the idle changes or even better, if the car stalls, replace the relays :)

Hmm, actually sounds similar to my '88 ix that is still waiting to get going. It does have a couple vacuum leaks and new replacement parts waiting to go on but it turns out the big problem was found after we pulled the valve cover. The second rocker arm on facing the passenger side was snapped and wedged into a frozen position which causes the misfire feel we are hoping. I picked up another head off of a running engine and have it cleaned up now waiting to go back on. Personally I would not have thought that it was a broken rocker based on how it was running, which was very similar to your description. If you haven't looked there, you might want to just make sure all is ok.

So your issue was a leaky intake manifold gasket?

Leaky because they were shitty gaskets (autzone or something), not all the nuts were even on there holding the manifold, those that were weren't tight, the fuel injectors had been removed, o-rings were torn, he used orange gasket sealer to put them back in the fuel rail :(

But yes, the majority of my problems stemmed from the intake manifold gaskets. Take throttle body cleaner, spray it at them, see if the idle changes
