    m20 ticking

    My e30 burns oil, it has 245,000 miles.

    I was adding oil today (mobil 1 5w-30) and I started it up with the hood open to see how she runs. There is a fairly loud ticking noise. People say it is the tappets but I stuck a long screwdriver onto the valve cover and listened and I am not sure it is coming from there. I am leaning towards the tappets myself but I am slightly worried. It has a newish head (put in at 193,000 miles) and an m20.

    no way, your m20 makes tapping noises? s52 time...

    j/k, you prob just need a valve adjustment. Search for the how-to on that...

      ticking could be the injectors as well. I always ran 20w50 in my e30s, then again I live in Texas where the weather doesn't get too cold.

      what are tappets?

        you guys are funny :(

        I am just concerned about my car because I love it so much

        I am pretty sure it is the tappets though, thanks

        tappets are the valves ie tappet valves

          well... m20 don't have tappets, just a cam, rocker, and valve.

          Tappets = "lifters" btw
